Pika mouths are tougher than my fingers! I intentionally put my data loggers deep inside pika haypiles to find out what temperatures pikas experience all year long under the talus. The pika that owns this haypile seems to have been a little miffed about having a data logger in its home, and decided to cover the logger with piles of thistle. Ouch! In this video I slowly and carefully digging out my logger.
Over the past four years, I’ve seen this pika territory boom, bust, and boom again. In this video blog I discuss how the pikas of Kennebec Pass have recolonized a prime haypile location and take advantage of one of the best wildflower crops in Colorado. Fun day today!
